🔥 Ongoing Crisis in Eastern Congo: A Humanitarian Emergency
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing one of the most underreported but devastating humanitarian crises in the world. In the eastern provinces—particularly North Kivu and Ituri—escalating violence, armed militia clashes, and political instability have displaced more than 6.9 million people, according to UNHCR reports in early 2025.
Civilians are fleeing with little more than the clothes on their backs. Many have witnessed atrocities, lost family members, or been forced to abandon homes, farms, and schools. Camps are overcrowded, humanitarian access is restricted, and food insecurity is rising at an alarming rate.
🇺🇬 Refugees in Uganda: A Region at Its Breaking Point
Uganda has long been hailed for its generous refugee policy, currently hosting over 1.5 million refugees—with more than 600,000 coming from Congo alone. The border areas of western Uganda, such as Bunagana, Kyangwali, and Nakivale, are absorbing tens of thousands of new arrivals each month.
But the strain is showing.
- Local health centers are overwhelmed.
- School classrooms have doubled in size overnight.
- Water sources are drying up faster than they can be replenished.
- Tensions are quietly growing between host communities and new arrivals competing for scarce resources.
The Congolese refugee crisis is no longer just a regional problem—it’s a global humanitarian failure waiting for meaningful international response.
🌍 The Ripple Effect: How It’s Affecting Communities
Refugee families are not the only ones suffering. Host communities—already living in poverty—are now sharing food, land, and schools with thousands of displaced people. As prices of maize, beans, and fuel surge, even basic survival becomes a daily struggle.
Children are dropping out of school. Women and girls face increased risk of gender-based violence. Health workers are burnt out. The humanitarian system is at capacity, and yet the flow of refugees continues.
đź’› The Collette Foundation’s Commitment: Standing With Congo
At the Collette Foundation, we believe every person deserves safety, dignity, and a future—regardless of where they’re born.
That’s why we’re actively mobilizing to assist in three core areas:
1. Emergency Relief for Congolese Refugees in Uganda
- Partnering with local NGOs to distribute food, clean water, blankets, and hygiene kits in refugee settlements.
- Supporting host communities with school supplies, seeds, and medical supplies to reduce local pressure.
2. Psychosocial and Trauma Support
- Launching mobile trauma-care workshops for survivors of violence—especially women and children.
- Training peer counselors from within refugee communities to offer ongoing emotional support.
3. Preparedness for Humanitarian Work Inside DRC
- Coordinating with partners on the ground to send aid convoys into North Kivu as soon as security permits.
- Planning future investment in sustainable rebuilding—schools, clinics, and women’s cooperatives—in areas devastated by conflict.
